Sanjaya Malakar was voted off of American Idol on April 18th of 2007. He had made it into the top 7 contestants.

People who take this game show seriously (which unfortunately is way too many people) became upset that someone of his singing ability (or lack of singing ability) had made it so far in the show. Others rooted him on and voted for him as a way of "destroying American Idol" including Howard Stern and the website VoteForTheWorst.com
