David Bowie recorded "Space Oddity" on June 20th of 1969.

The story of the song is based on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Coincidentally (and perhaps part of the reason the story interested Bowie so much) the main character in the novel/movie (both came out in 1968) was David Bowman.

A 1975 reissue of this song would become Bowie's first UK #1 hit.
