"(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock" as recorded by Bill Haley and his Comets hit #1 in the US on July 9th of 1955.
This was the first rock n roll song to ever hit #1. It stayed at #1 for 8 weeks in the states and became a hit all around the world.
It was written in 1952 by Max C. Freedman and James E. Myers. Myers claims that the song was written specifically for Haley although Haley was not actually the first to record the song.
The song set off an avalanche of rock n roll hits in the 1950s. It was later used as the theme song for the TV show Happy Days for it's first season.
