Buddy Holly Was Born On September 7, 1936
Buddy Holly was born on September 7th of 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. His birth name was Charles Hardin Holley. The change in spelling from Holley to Holly was merely because of a typo on a contract that he signed.
Buddy Holly is one of the most influential rock n roll artists of all time. He was one of the first "self contained" rock n rollers that wrote and performed all of his own music. Holly was a big influence on the Beatles. Their name was chosen partly as a homage to the name of Buddy Holly's band the Crickets. Today Paul McCartney owns the publishing rights to Holly's songs.
Holly, along with fellow music stars Ritchie Vallens & "The Big Bopper" (real name J.P. Richardson), died in a plane wreck on February 3, 1959. The 21 year old pilot of the plane, Roger Peterson, also died. They were on a trip from Clear Lake, Iowa to the next stop (Fargo, North Dakota) on the tour that Holly, Vallens, & The Big Bopper were headlining.
Holly was only 22 years old. He would have been 71 years old today.
