Lynyrd Skynyrd's Plane Crashed On October 20, 1977

A plane carrying the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from one show to the next crashed in Mississippi on October 20th of 1977.

The crash killed singer/songwriter Ronnie Van Sant, guitarist/singer Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines. The wreck also killed the pilot, co-pilot, and the band's manager.

Other members of the band were also in the crash but survived. Some of them were injured.

The remaining members disbanded the band after the crash but reunited in 1987 and still perform with the reformed band to this day (with many personnel changes along the way.)

Lynyrd Skynyrd's most famous songs are "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird."
