2008 Album Sales

I’ve come across this information on 2008 album sale totals and I found it interesting enough to want to pass it along:

About 115,000 new albums were released in 2008.
110 of those sold over 250,000 copies.
About 1,500 of them sold over 10,000 copies.
And about 6,000 of them sold over 1,000 copies.

That means there were 109,000 albums released last year that didn’t sell even 1,000 copies. I don’t know why I find these numbers fascinating, but I do.

I think these numbers are meant to show that the music industry is dying but I actually find it somewhat surprising that there were 110 album releases that sold over a quarter million copies last year.

  1. Those sales figures don’t include digitial copies, I’m guessing? The statistic that only 6000 sold over 1000 copies can’t be correct though, surely?!

  2. I’m not sure if they include digital album sales or not…

  3. Ah right. I too am quite surprised that as many as 110 albums sold more than a quarter of a million; if these statistics are accurate though then it’s quite worrying I feel that so few albums sold more than 1000 copies.
