Bands to Enjoy

Greetings! Just let me start this evening’s proceedings by saying that the Vivian Girls are absolute rubbish from the deepest recesses of Hipster Hell! Now then, I present Bands to Enjoy!

Popol Vuh: Awesome spiritual vibes and a wall-of-guitars from heaven approach that simply can’t be messed with! The late Florian Fricke was both da bomb and da man! Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Fischelscher was the high-priest of spidery lead guitar heroics, and is still active today in some capacity! This is a magical music that is guaranteed to cure all ills forever. You may have heard some Popol Vuh music in a Werner Herzog film and been totally unaware of this fact!

The Monks: They release one album in 1966 and lived to tell the tale decades after the fact! DEVO wishes they could have been this cool! They totally wish!

Scott Joplin: He’s the king, baby! Represent! Ragtime is his baby and he played slower than molasses.

Syd Barrett: Whether he be with Da Floyd or without Da Floyd, Mr. Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett will always be da man! Rest in peace, dude!

The Turtles: Awesome Bubblegum Pop, awesome work with Frank Zappa and T-Rex, just plain awesome! This is some hardcore ear-candy, motherfuckers!

Gram Parsons: He was most interesting when briefly involved with The Byrds and his baby The Flying Burrito Brothers, but some of his solo shit is safely da bomb as well, playa.

John Coltrane: This is some real religious music, and I enjoy all of his various eras, from the truly bizarre and abstract to the tasty Hard Bop, I want it all, baby!

Johann Sebastian Bach: The mathematical master of music! Music treated as an academic discipline never had it so good! Might I suggest listening to this while you sleep?

Captain Beefheart: One of the true lyrical masters with the loveliest of voices also benefited from having some of the most creatively ripe musicians available at his disposal to boot!

Judee Sill: Truly the most impressive singer/songwriter of the early ‘70’s. She was a highly skilled lyricist, composer, guitarist, pianist, and vocalist. Charming yet powerful! Sweet yet so very deep!

The Beach Boys: I specifically speak of the gems released between 1966 thru 1971, so we’re talking “Pet Sounds” thru “Surf’s Up”. This is only some of the greatest Vocal Pop of all time, the birth of the Pocket Symphony! Represent!
