Caroliner (Rainbow?)
By Marvin Marks on Aug 14, 2009 in Mushrooms
Tonight I’ve come across a band I had never heard of before called Caroliner (or is it Caroliner Rainbow? I’m not sure) that apparently formed in San Francisco in 1982. The videos I’ve seen on YouTube (search for “Caroliner Rainbow”) and the songs I’ve listened to on their MySpace page are so ridiculously insane that I felt I should share what I’ve found with the readers of this blog.
On their wiki page I found this review of their show/music by Alex Ross of the New Yorker:
“On top of the visual extravagance, Caroliner has somehow forged an original musical style. The songs typically fuse together a grinding, relentless bass line, country-ish banjo strummings, spastic vocals ranging across several octaves, a wheezing organ drone, and screeching violin tremolos. Despite the splintered aesthetic, a lumbering grandeur gathers …… Space does not permit a description of the lyrics, which purport to interpret the prophecies of a 19th-century Wisconsin cow.”
Ah yes, “Mushrooms” seems like the right category for this entry as Caroliner (?) is about the most insanely psychedelic thing I’ve ever seen/heard. True madness! Enjoy.

I looked these guys up. Holy crap. Pure insanity! That’s some really righteous NOISE.
