Chris Martin was born on March 2nd of 1977 in Exeter, Devon, England. Martin is best known as the lead singer and principle songwriter for Coldplay, arguably the most commercially successful band of this decade.

Coldplay’s debut album was 2000′s Parachutes which featured the hit “Yellow.” It charted at #4 on the UK singles charts. Parachutes reached #1 on the UK album charts but only #51 in the US. Although it’s never climbed higher than #51 in the US it has gone on to be certified 2X Platinum by the RIAA (over 2 million copies shipped in the US.)

Their second album was 2002′s A Rush of Blood to the Head which surpassed the success of their debut album by not only reaching #1 in the UK but also reaching #1 in Australia, Canada, Italy, Norway, and other countries. It reached #5 in the US and has gone on to be certified 4X Platinum by the RIAA.

2005′s X&Y was even more successful reaching #1 almost everywhere in the world including in the US.

Their most recent album, 2008′s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, duplicated X&Y‘s feat of reaching #1 all around the world. In fact it has reached #1 in 36 countries.

Critically Coldplay have received mixed reviews. They have received mostly positive reviews from the more conservative “old school” reviewers at Rolling Stone, Q, and Entertainment Weekly and more lukewarm reviews from the “hipster” reviewers at Pitchfork.
