Christmas Presents For Beatles Fans
By Marvin Marks on Dec 13, 2009 in Features
There’s not much time left to shop on Amazon.com for Christmas presents as the 25th is quickly approaching and you want to give time for the shipping. With that in mind, here are some ideas for Christmas gifts for the Beatles fan in your family (or for yourself, that’s good too.)
This box set includes the stereo remasters for every Beatles studio album from 1963′s debut Please Please Me to their final release, 1970′s Let It Be. It also includes the double disc Past Masters compilation which contains all of their great non-album tracks like “Rain,” “Paperback Writer,” and “Hey Jude.” On top of all of that, this set also features a DVD with a mini documentary on the making of each album (this is very basic stuff, but still kind of neat.)
This box set could be a great gift for the really serious Beatles fans who want to hear the albums “as they were originally meant to be heard.” It includes the band’s first ten albums in mono (Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, & Let It Be were not included because they were never mixed/released in mono in the first place.) It also features the double disc Mono Masters compilation which is the mono equivalent of the Past Masters compilation.
The first ever official release of The Beatles music in mp3. It’s basically a digital version of The Beatles in Stereo Box Set. It includes all of the same albums and all of the same visual elements except for it’s in mp3 and 24bit “better than CD” FLAC files and on a little USB flash drive (with an Apple Corps theme) instead of on 17 discs.
The Beatles Anthology DVDs, CDs, & Book
These may not be new products at this point (having originally come out in the ’90s) but they’re still really great and I’m imagining there are a lot of newer Beatles fans who don’t own them yet. As far as the CDs go, I’m a particularly big fan of Anthology 2 & Anthology 3. They’re both really great compilations. Admittedly Anthology 1 is more for the “completest” that really has to own everything by the Fab Four or who is interested in the history of the band (or for those who really do prefer the early “innocent Beatles.”)
Even if the person you’re shopping for isn’t much of a video game fan I would definitely consider this game because I don’t like video games much at all and I still love playing it. I’m a particularly huge fan of the singing and drumming aspects of the game because they’re so realistic. You really are singing the song and you really are hitting the beats in the song on your drum kit. The guitar aspect doesn’t interest me much because it’s nothing like playing a real guitar and seems to have little to do with the music but some people enjoy that a lot.
This is a good gift for the fan who gets a big kick out of their early stuff (like the Please Please Me album) particularly the early covers because this double disc is filled with covers. It’s the only live album in their catalog.
This is an interesting remix album. Like a lot of other fans I was pretty suspect of this when it first came out (in 2006) but I was pleasantly surprised by it. I think most (but not all) fans would enjoy having this in their collection. It’s definitely aimed at fans of the psychedelic era.
There are a lot of great books on The Beatles. There are complete scores (with guitar tab) for musicians and books like A Hard Day’s Write aimed at fans who want to know the stories behind the songs.
Kindle Wireless Reading Device
Speaking of books, a Kindle could be a great gift for just about anyone that reads. At first I thought the idea of a digital book reader was kind of dumb, but when I looked at all of the features that this thing actually has, it’s pretty impressive. And there’s a huge selection of books, magazines, and newspapers available to instantly download tot he device (including just about all of the books about The Beatles.)
If the Beatles fanatic that you’re shopping for already owns all of the more obvious Beatles gifts like all of their CDs then you could look at games (like Beatles Trivial Pursuit) & puzzles as potential presents.
As you can imagine, there’s a huge selection of shirts, hats, and other stuff with Beatles logos and images available on Amazon.
Records are a cool possibility for a Fab Four freak with a vinyl fetish but with remastered vinyl Beatles LPs probably coming out sometime in 2010, you’ll likely want to hold off on buying the old vinyl now.
I have to say, I don’t like getting calendars as gifts. I don’t use calendars, my computer has it’s own that’s’ easier to use. But I guess some people must enjoy getting them because there’s a huge market of ‘em right? Or is it just the kind of gift people buy when they can’t think of anything better to get?
