Classic Rock Box Sets

The Beatles

The fab four are actually a bit late to the box set game as they are finally (in 2009) releasing their first CD box sets (I know, I know, what about the Capital Box Sets? Eh…) Of course they are doing it in style with not just one box set but two. There’s a Beatles Stereo Box Set which includes every song The Beatles recorded & released from 1962 through 1970 in newly remastered stereo sound. And there’s a Beatles Mono Box Set which includes their work up through 1968 (The White Album) in their original mono mixes on CD for the first time.

Bob Dylan

The Limited Edition Catalog Box Set includes 15 albums in both CD & SACD versions (SACD = extremely high sound quality.) Most of the albums are also included in a 5.1 mix (which is great if you have your system set up for it.)

Grateful Dead

There’s The Golden Road which includes 12 discs covering the years 1965 through 1973 and there’s Beyond Description which includes 12 discs covering 1973 through 1989. Grateful Dead fans may also be interested in the Jerry Garcia box set All Good Things which includes 6 discs covering Garcia’s solo career from ’72 through ’82.

Pink Floyd

Oh, By the Way is a 16 disc set which includes every Pink Floyd studio album (from 1967′s Piper at the Gates of Dawn through 1994′s The Division Bell.)

The Rolling Stones

This box set includes 13 discs which include all of the band’s studio and live albums from Sticky Fingers on (except for Exile on Main St.)

Neil Young

Archives, Vol. 1 (’63-’72) is available in three different formats (CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray.) The sound quality is apparently exceptional with this box set (I can’t vouch for it personally as I haven’t heard it yet.)

Queen

The Crown Jewels is an 8 disc set which includes the band’s first 8 studio albums from 1973′s self titled album through 1980′s The Game in high quality remastered sound. Each album is packaged in replicas of the original vinyl LP packaging.

The Doors

Perception includes all of The Doors Jim Morrison era albums not only on CD but also on DVD (for superior sound quality.) There are also bonus tracks on each disc. There’s a 180 gram vinyl box set for The Doors too. It includes all of six of their albums (the first one twice, both in stereo and mono.)

The Who

The Who haven’t released an all inclusive type box set yet, but they did release the four disc set Thirty Years of Maximum R&B in 1994. It’s a mixture of hits, album tracks, b-sides, and live performances which spans their entire career (up to that point.)

Genesis

From 1970 through 1975 Genesis released five albums (one of which was the double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.) Each of those albums is included in the Genesis 1970-1975 box set which was released in a variety of formats (including 180 gram vinyl.) On top of that they’ve also got a new boxed set coming out on September 29th called Live 1973-2007 which, obviously, features live performances from 1973 through 2007.

Janis Joplin

Box of Pearls is a five disc set covering Joplin’s entire career.

Creedence Clearwater Revival

The CCR box set includes all of their studio/live albums in one box. It also includes one disc of material from before the band was called CCR.

The Zombies

Zombie Heaven is a four disc, 119 track collection. It includes every studio recording The Zombies ever made along with plenty of demos and live recordings to make it interesting even for those who already own their albums. 41 of the tracks were not previously released. It also includes a 64 page booklet. As of right now there are 29 reviews on Amazon, and every single one of them is a 5 star review.

Tom Petty

Petty’s box set Playback includes 6 discs which works as a greatest hits + rarities collection. It covers his career from his debut album in 1976 through 1993.

Jimi Hendrix

The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set is a four disc collection of otherwise unreleased studio and live recordings.

The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys have a few box sets to their name including the four disc Pet Sounds Sessions set, the US Singles Collection box set, and the five disc Good Vibrations set.

AC/DC

This 17 disc set is simply titled “Box Set” which seems pretty fitting. It includes every album the band released from 1974 (High Voltage) through 2000 (Stiff Upper Lip.) It was released as CD box and a vinyl box (which is currently discontinued.)

Nuggets: Original Artyfacts

Nuggets is a four disc collection of psychedelic music recorded from 1965 through 1968. It includes songs by bands like The Electric Prunes, The Turtles, Love, The Sonics, and 13th Floor Elevators.

  1. Actually those Capital Box Sets look pretty cool… I don’t know why I’ve never bought them. Although they seem kind of unnecessary now with the new box sets coming out.

  2. Looking at the prices on these things is actually another really good reason to buy The Beatles Box Sets now rather than later… it looks like the prices tend to revert back to the list price after they’ve been out for awhile.
