Cocteau Twins – “Heaven or Las Vegas”
By Mozart Breath on Jun 30, 2008 in Song Reviews
This song is a mystical wonderful experience; it is transition time for the Twins known as Cocteau on the album of the same name, and all of this despite the fact that my granddaughter is a flaming lesbian from the Land of Wind and Ghosts. A great deal of bittersweet lead guitar goodness from Robin Guthrie makes me want to change my name to Shit Baby. Liz Fraser is in immaculate voice, the lyrics cannot be deciphered so think what you wish, which then makes the listening experience all the more educational.
The song is the lead single on this 1990 record ( or one would assume), and really, in 1990…did anything in the realm of Pop sound anything at all like this? It is highly unlikely, unless you want to blend then contemporary releases by both Morrissey and Kate Bush, but that is as close as it gets. This song, to me, strikes me as being about redemption or the inability to express the enjoyment of a new found love. Basically, this is the musical equivalent of a fresh start, and the feeling is a purely triumphant experience. Sincerely epic ear candy and confusingly religious, but wonderfully so…
…The Twins would continue is this dreamy and beautiful direction on their next record, 1993’s Four-Calendar Café, which is painfully underrated and perhaps that is something I will get into on another occasion not too distant from now. Please love and respect me, thank you.
