Five Times August

When you come to this guy’s MySpace page you get a huge banner ad for his new single “Overrated.” To whom this would be not annoying, I’m not sure. Five Times August appears to be a dude named Brad Skistimas in Austin, Texas who is attempting to single handily destroy any reputation the city has for good music.

Five Times August is currently ranked as the 3rd most popular unsigned artist on MySpace right after Tila Tequila and Hollywood Undead. As of this writing he has had nearly 50,000 plays just today. One would expect 49,000 of those plays are by 14 year old girls who don’t know any better. The other 1,000 plays are by guys like me trying to figure out what in hell anyone could possibly hear in this music.

“Overrated” sounds like an 80s sitcom theme song. I don’t know what else to say about it. It’s like plastic come to life (but only barely.) Five Times August proves you don’t need to sign to a major label to be a sell out or be soulless. Unbelievably this guy apparently considers his music to be “alternative.” Yeah, he’s the next Kurt Cobain.

“Better With You” is even more nauseating than “Overrated.” If you can make through a full listen of this song you are a stronger man than I, I Had to stop it about half way through.

His vocals in “Up To Me” bring disgust levels too high to go on. Listen to this guy. It reminds me of a song that a character in a teen drama would sing when he starts his new totally cool band.

One wonders how far down the list of “top artists” we’ll have to go before we get to hear music with any redeeming quality whatsoever?
