It sums it ALL up for me when an intelligent explanation for what’s going on here and encouragement for you to open YOUR minds ends up with the same responses from the past three years.

Another thing; I don’t hate H.U. because I have never heard them and probably never will but I certainly have a degree of contempt for the mentality of Most of their fans. The general facts as I see them are that they can’t spell and they only know 5 or 6 different words. Swearing is no longer shocking! It’s as middle of the road and generic and co-opted as anything else in this feudalistic society we live in. “Oh I’m an individual because I look like everybody else.” Commercially packaged rebellion.

Most of you make arguments along the lines of “You make an album and see how hard it is…etc…etc…” The music critic’s job is not to make music but to help me to decide whether or not I should investigate a new group or album. The Band’s job is to make the music. A critic can get bored so he/she needs to sharpen their writing skills when writing about something that MAY NOT HAVE ANY SUBSTANCE to write about. Not to be taken personally.

Also, articles, music, reviews, myspace, are all designed to be consumed as entertainment and some make the mistake in thinking that it is real life or true American culture or art. There are cultures in other parts of the world that are thousands of years old and make it a point to be Nationally proud of it. Then America marches in (with a culture that’s only 200 years old)making those silly ‘representin’ hand gestures all over the foreign masses. Do we have any idea how idiotic that looks? But I digress.

Arguments have also been made that, because they’ve now been “signed’,and have trillions of fans, that they must be culturally important and here to stay. The same thing was thought about MANY OTHERS in the past but no one has time for New Kids On The Block or Backstreet Boys or even any of the thousands of lame ass grunge imitators anymore. Very few HUGE acts have staying power and that fact will continue to be proved right. Because, as popular as an act may be, sooner or later (likely sooner) someone will come along with a more sophisticated hand gesture, a scarier mask, or a faster dance move and bigger pants, and there goes their career.

As far as the argument that ‘They have all these fans, they must be good!’ goes, well, Just because everybody’s arm went up at the same time didn’t make the Nazis right. Some things are just bad and ..just maybe.. some of the “totally badass bling totin’, jes chillin’ back in their cot peepin’ at the hos, pistol grip pump straight up gangsta representin homeboy” artistic attempts actually do HAVE NO SOCIALLY REDEEMING QUALITIES!

Another thing; Because the music ‘business’ for the past 35 or so years has been run by a 13 year old girl named Tiffany, we have been trained from the cradle to the elevator to accept that only pop music (don’t kid yourself, it’s all POP music. Punk rock? Business just sterilized the safety pin and made it safe for MASS CONSUMPTION) is the only music that exists.
The last 2 or 3 generations need to educate themselves that not all music comes from guitars or Decks. The middle of the road just SEEMS spacious, but beyond the ditch, there are fields of music ripe for discovery that, who knows, might even be right up your alley.
