“I Am The Walrus” - The Beatles

“I Am The Walrus” was the song that made me a Beatles fan.
Growing up I was ignorant of The Beatles for the most part. I thought of them as only a “pop” band that was an earlier era’s fad with songs like “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You.” It wasn’t until I watched a clip of the “I Am The Walrus” video from the Magical Mystery Tour movie that I realized The Beatles were a lot more than I thought they were.
The “I Am The Walrus” Video:
It made such an impression on me that I bought the ‘67-’70 blue greatest hits double disc on CD and it didn’t take listening to that long before The Beatles became my favorite band and I went on to buy all of their albums, anthologies, remixes, books, etc and so forth.
To this day “I Am The Walrus” is one of my favorite tracks I’ve ever heard. I’ve listened to it countless times yet I am still able to hear something new in it when I listen today. That’s the mark of a truly great song. Not only does it catch one’s interest initially, it has the depth to keep that interest over many listens over many years.
It was recorded at the height of The Beatles “kitchen sink” psychedelic recording phase when they were experimenting with using the studio as an instrument of it’s own. This experimentation has been extremely influential on many musicians & producers since.
It’s on the Magical Mystery Tour album (which wasn’t really an album exactly) which is a great one to pick up if you want to hear the Beatles at their most experimental and psychedelic.
