Prince's Purple Rain (the soundtrack to the movie of the same name) hit the top of the US Billboard charts on August 4th of 1984.

It stayed at #1 for 24 consecutive weeks; From 8/4/84 to 1/12/1985. This was the longest any album stayed at the top in the 1980s.

Interestingly enough; Bruce Springteen's Born in the U.S.A. both preceeded and succeeded Purple Rain at the top of the charts.

This was Prince's first album recorded with and credited with his backing band The Revolution.

The album contained 3 major hits: "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," and the title trck "Purple Rain." "I Would Die 4 U" and "Take Me with U" also made the US singles charts.
