Lisa Loeb’s “Stay (I Missed You)” was included on the Reality Bites soundtrack and her debut album Tails.
Actor Ethan Hawke “discovered” Loeb as he was living across the street from her in NYC. He took a tape of “Stay (I Missed You)” and gave it to Ben Stiller who was the director of the movie he was appearing in at the time, Reality Bites. Stiller decided to include the song in the movie and on the soundtrack and it launched Loeb’s career as a singer.
Loeb was unsigned at the time her song hit #1 on the charts, making her the only unsigned artist to ever reach #1 on the US charts.
“Stay (I Missed You)” stayed at #1 for 3 weeks until it was knocked off the top spot by “I’ll Make Love To You” by Boyz II Men on August 27, 1994.
The music video for the song was directed by Ethan Hawke and features Loeb singing the song while walking around a mostly empty NYC apartment. The video was filmed in one shot with no editing. The video also features a very groovy cat.
