Metallica's self titled Metallica hit #1 on the US album charts on August 31st of 1991, 16 years ago today. The album is better known as The Black Album due to it's almost entirely black cover. This is also a play on The Beatles' White Album from 1968 which was also officially self titled.
The Black Album stayed at #1 for 4 weeks in the US and it featured some of Metallica's most well known songs like "Enter Sandman" & "Nothing Else Matters."
The Black Album is commonly seen a division album in Metallica's career where they ventured from their thrash metal roots into more commercial hard rock territory.
