My Favorite Nirvana Songs and Why

I will start with “School,” as it rocks the bells in so many ways that I am hardly alive any longer. The riff is like some bizarre Beatles deal and mingled with an odd bluesy Hendrix-like solo, if you will. The lyrics are a simple mantra about the supposed demonic Hell that is High School? I love the fact that it is simple and to the point, like quite a lot in the Nirvana Riff Rock catalog. The screaming is like a joyful exuberance and twice as fragrant. Catch an earful of the thundering fantasy…

Moving on to “In Bloom,” this is my favorite cut on the “Never Mind” cultural handbook, as there is a clear element of humor and a sort of good natured vibe that not all Nirvana material can boast of. It’s clearly one of the band’s better singles and showcases their ability to cook up a decent Pop melody while maintaining that dastardly Rock edge. Check it out:

Ah, yes! “Scentless Apprentice,” what a number! Dave Grohl cooked up some whacky Public Image Limited drum beat, and everything else just essentially fell into place like butter between my legs. The tension driving the song is truly powerful, and unlike a lot of Nirvana cuts on record, this is a song that is equally as powerful in its original studio form, although Nirvana truly worked best as a live act regardless. Heavens yes!

So, here you have my personal favorite Nirvana cuts, and don’t you dare get me wrong, I also enjoy “Tourette’s” and “Aneurysm,” but I chose to leave them off of my epic list for no real substantial reason in particular. And needless to say, these Nirvana kids are shaping up to be the voice of my generation…and oddly enough, changing my pretty little haircut in the process.

Cheerio friends,
