Psychedelic Music On Last.FM

I’m a big Last.FM fan. One of my favorite things to do is to listen to the tag radio stations (and similar artist radio and lots of the other features there, but this article is about the tag radio so let’s try to show some focus here!)

In this blog post I’m going to listen to the psychedelic tag radio station and see what pops up and write a few words about the tunes I hear. Sound like a good idea? Or perhaps the worst idea I’ve had yet. I doubt the latter, as I’ve had some extremely bad ideas that I’m pretty sure even this horrendous idea cannot beat out.

“Candy and a Currant Bun” by Pink Floyd

This is incredible. This is a great example of how awesome Last.FM is. I consider myself a rather large Syd Barrett fan (having both of his solo albums and of course the first Pink Floyd album and some other assorted random tracks by him with Pink Floyd & solo) but I’d never heard this before. This is a b-side from the Pink Floyd single Arnold Layne from 1967.

“The Gilded Palace of Sin” by The Flying Burrito Brothers

I haven’t heard this song before. You can really hear a lot of groovy new music just by rocking the Last.FM radio and while the sound quality isn’t great, it’s good enough for government work. This is a nice track. I dig it. It’s a bit country rock but strange enough to get me into it.

“Fire Engine” by 13th Floor Elevators

I just watched a documentary about Roky Erickson the other day. It’s pretty good, I recommend it. He’s had an amazing life. The documentary is called “You’re Gonna Miss Me” and is available on Netflix (that’s how I saw it.) I also saw him live in NYC last year which was apparently the first time he ever played in New York. It was a great show. For as much as he’s been through he was able to still able to do his thing, so I thought that was pretty cool.

“Hung Up on a Dream” by The Zombies

This is a great tune. I like the Zombies although I don’t have any of their albums in full, maybe I should get one, eh?

“For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo Springfield

Of course this track has been played in every Vietnam era movie made over the last 30 years but it’s still a good tune and it’s nice to have the occasional well known song thrown in there among the more obscure tunes. Plus if you really don’t feel like hearing a song you can always click on the next button. I’m enjoying this one right now though. I really like lead guitar off in the distance.

“Go Down Your Line” by The Byrds

I’m not familiar with this track but it’s pretty fresh although the production is a bit too messy. Lot going on in this one.

“In The Beginning…” by Psychic TV

This is some crazy shit right here. Dig it.

“My Clown” by July

This sounds pretty Syd Barrett inspired which sounds like a good thing to me. I’ve never heard of the band July before. It’s really cool how you can be introduced to more obscure groups like this on Last.FM, according to their Last.FM bio they only released one album (self titled) in 1968.

  1. What a great site here, glad you commented on my Lennon Sketch, I am certainly going to pass this site along to my guitar slingers.

I love a mix of music too, I think you stifle yourself when you only listen to one particular genre. It’s great to experiment, I love going to used music stores, and just grabbing a lp or a cd that looks interesting, one I never heard of.

A favorite of mine was one that cost me .99 and it’s Native American with a twist, called Brule. Love it, and such deal!

  2. I have found that the sound quality varies with the song. Most of the time it’s pretty good. I have discovered tons of new music via friends I’ve made on LFM or by listening to tag or other people’s stations. I’m a progressive rock fan and didn’t realize they were actually GREAT bands out there still writing fantastic music like Porcupine Tree. Stop over and say hi, I’m Onaridge.

  3. Yes there’s all kinds of bands creating all kinds of music. And that’s what you can find on Last.FM - If someone just listened to the popular radio they’d think there was nothing but… Well I don’t know I haven’t listened to a radio in a few years. But I imagine it’s all shit on there, that’s how it was last time I listened.
