Last.FM’s Top 10 Artists
By Marvin Marks on Apr 5, 2009 in Features
As I’ve mentioned about 50 times before Last.FM is my favorite music website. The radio player is a great way of hearing new music (I dig using the similar artist route and the tag route) and I also like the charts they have of what Last.FM members are listening to.
I think it’s a reasonably accurate way to know what people who are actually really into music (you have to be pretty into music to bother with it) are into. Of course when looking at this you have to consider that it’s mostly people under 30.
You also have to consider that if a band recently releases a new album (or more likely had their album leaked on the internet) that they’re going to see a spike in listeners. But it’s definitely a more accurate image of what people are actually listening to than just looking at who sold the most albums in some particular week.
Anyway this is the top 10 artists on Last.FM as right now:
#1 Radiohead
#2 Coldplay
#3 The Beatles
#4 The Killers
#5 Muse
#6 Metallica
#7 Red Hot Chili Peppers
#8 Kings of Leon
#9 Nirvana
#10 Linkin Park
There are a few “WTF?” on this list: Kings of Leon? I barely even know who they are. Should I? Linkin Park? Are people really still listening to them? I think they are awful so I have a hard time understanding that one. I’m actually surprised at all of the bands on the list other than Radiohead, Coldplay, The Beatles, and Nirvana. The rest are all more popular than I realized. The Killers and Muse both in the top five?
But that being said I definitely don’t feel as disconnected from this list as I do the top 10 songs on the radio or the top 10 albums on Billboard.
Since I first started looking at this chart a few years ago the most consistent bands as far as being at the top of the chart every week have been Radiohead & The Beatles. And since I pretty much think they’re the two greatest bands of all time so I can definitely get down with that.
