Mindless Self Indulgence

I’ve been looking for a band to challenge Hollywood Undead for the title of “Worst Music Ever” and just about 15 seconds into the first song on Mindless Self Indulgence’s MySpace page “Never Wanted To Dance” I think I may have a true challenger. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ready to hand the crown of “worst ever” over to them just as Hollywood Undead is monumentally horrible but this is some pretty horrendous music.

“Never Wanted To Dance” – Sounds like about 10 (awful) songs all playing at once. Don’t get me wrong, that can be a good thing (if the songs aren’t awful) but this is just absolutely stupid. Much like Hollywood Undead, it sounds like some combination of every bad trend in music over the past 30 years or so. I hear some Marilyn Manson in here along with some pop-punk, and some rap-rock-metal. It’s all here.

“Lights Out” – Oh and cheesy strings. They’ve got amazingly cheesy strings and cheezy techno music and cheezy sound effects. They’ve truly got it all. Again like with Hollywood Undead I’m reminded of boy bands. It sounds like if the Backstreet Boys were a rap-metal band.

Alright, I think you get the idea.

So how did I come across this awful band? I found them while looking at the top artist charts at MySpace.com looking for a band to review of course. They are ranked #1 on MySpace.com’s top artist charts for unsigned bands. At this point I pretty much assume any of the high rated “artists” are going to suck ass. Which makes sense when you think about MySpace being so teenager heavy (and teenagers having generally awful taste in music of course.) Not that it still isn’t sad. 26 million plays (lifetime thus far) for these clowns while so many good artists and bands on MySpace go largely unnoticed.

Here’s a picture of the guys (and gals, apparently) by the way:

So is this all some sort of tongue in cheek joke like I assume Hollywood Undead must be? Possibly. But even if it is, I don’t find it all that funny.

  3. I’ve heard of these guys for quite a while now. Back in high school I had several “friends” who liked to listen to them (I believe they debuted my senior year). I’d always tolerate it and even try to get into it sometimes, but never really could. This kind of music is, for me, like a patron of fine art going to a gallery to see paintings and stumbling upon, say, a scribbled sketch of bugs bunny. Then, some kid comes in to the gallery and sees it and thinks it’s the most amazing thing in the world because it is the only thing he could understand and shows it to all his friends, so that “artist” makes more “sketches” and sells them to more and more kids. this is what MSI and others, like HU, are in the music world (the true talent being represented by the real paintings). I’ve had a multitude of their fans try to convince me that they’ve got some level of talent, but I never come out swayed. They suck, plain and simple, and get away with it by selling out to kids who want something “fun” to listen to. I suppose I am ranting, but there is just more and more of this crap becoming popular while truely gifted artists are going totally unnoticed. What a sad, sad world we live in.

  6. “teenagers having generally awful taste in music of course”

    You were a teenager too.

So be say teenagers listen to crap you are saying you listen to crap too because most likely you listen to the same stuff you did when you were 16.

  7. Doomboy – No. I don’t. I hate almost everything I listened to when I was 16 and so do a lot of other adults.

There are only two types of people that still like the music they liked when they were 16:

    (1) The type of people who actually got into good music as teenagers (there are some of these people and I envy them because I wasn’t cool enough to like good music when I was a teen.)

    (2) Stupid people.

  8. Actually, Mindless Self Indulgence has been around for over a decade. Their known for their relentless touring, extremely loyal fan base, and unique music.

How can you compare an established band to a rap group that got lucky?

    Do your research first kid.

  9. Someone who listens to crap like this has no business calling anyone else “kid.”

I will agree if your to simple to understand the depth of the lyrics and vocals of either band than yes I could see how it wouldn’t be pleasant but when you can actually understand the bands they make alot of sense and sound great

  12. Wow you self-righteous fuck. Teenagers having bad taste in music is utter bullshit as I stated on the Hollywood Undead article. And Hollywood Undead are trying to be good and failing MISERABLY creating dismal music. Mindless Self Indulgence embraces their terrible music making it listenable. The point is for it to be offensive, vulgar, and disgusting while also giving off a party vibe, which I think it accomplishes. But anyway back to the teenagers thing. I’m 18, about to start college, majoring in music industry. Alice in Chains is bad? Or how about Nirvana? Oh you must mean The Who are an abomination against consonant music. You elitist pricks are beginning to annoy me, I thought I would like this site. Meh…

  14. I happened in here entirely on accident, but the snide, condescending tone of your “article” caught my attention.

So, I reviewed your choice topics for discussion and I noticed that you are inclined to cover only those mainstream artists who have been around for atleast 20 years or so, and fucking dead people. Im sorry youre stuck in the old days, kiddo. Elvis, Sublime, Dave Matthews… all good stuff… but not the ONLY stuff worth listening to. In one post you decide to cover “2008″ releases, and list that droning, whiney, repetative trent reznor album as one of the best. Boy, thats edgy. It might count, if he hadnt been around since the early 90′s. Well, and if it didnt suck like everything since The Downward Spiral.

Your petty attack on teenagers clearly shows your disdain for anything new, different, or ::gasp:: youthful. You are obviously entirely out of touch. I’m 28 years old and I enjoy both MSI and Hollywood Undead, at times. I also may be inclined to check out whatever is happening in indie, industrial, gothic, electronica, ebm, outlaw country, progressive metal, classical, or countless other genres.

Stick to covering the old stuff grandpa.

  15. Roxanne, you sound like the type of person who confuses “new” with “good.”

Certainly there is some great new music being made but there’s a lot of absolute garbage. It takes a discerning taste to know the difference.

If you like MSI and Hollywood Undead that means you have no taste. It’s as simple as that.

Those that have taste enjoy all music regardless of when it was made. 200 years ago or last week, it doesn’t matter to me. What I care about is true quality. Something that is really worth listening to.

  16. @ Marvin:

That right there is what bothers me. I mean I HATE Hollywood Undead and I only like MSI for sheer shallow entertainment value from their superficial music. But, your statement about anyone who actually regards these bands as good has no musical taste is possibly the most smug, pretentious, generalized piece of self-righteous, elitist douchebaggery (have I forgotten any synonyms?) that I have ever read.

  19. MSI is a good band, just cause you like listening to OLDER bands that no-one really cares about doesn’t give you the right to bash EVERY good band out there. NOBODY HERE sees YOU trying to create you’r own music so WTF? MSI & HU aren’t garbage. Besides HU has more fans than haters anyway. Just think of Eminem, he beat out all the Haters & is still around.

  20. This blog really hits the NAIL on the head with everything. Back when I was in middle school, I will admit that I was an MSI fan, the first show I ever went to was theirs. Now, 5 years later, I don’t know what I was thinking. Just weird garbage. ‘Older bands that no-one really cares about’ …..so just because someone says that they don’t like what every other teenager likes, it automatically means that they’re old and listen to classical music? Ah…..like I said in my comment on Hollywood Undead, people who enjoy this garbage, aren’t exposed to anything else. For example, I live in a very small town where many of the people my age all listen to Mindless Self Indulgence or Hollywood Undead or Slipknot and claim that they are ‘metal fans’. So I would show them some of the bands that I enjoy, and they would have absolutely no clue who any of these artists were. It’s all about the mainstream it seems. Nobody really cared about HU or MSI until they became engulfed in popularity. Then everybody knew who they were, and just because they had thousands upon thousands of fans and millions of profile views, people thought they were good. I mean, if so many people like them, they must be doing something right, right? No. A bands talent does not rely on how many fans he has.

  21. Alright, first i need to ask, what bands do you listen to that make everything else anyone listens to that isn’t you and your two or three friends? Secondly, They thrive off of people who talk shit about them, they love it, So i’d like to thank you for the help you are giving them. And by the way, Hollywood Undead do what they do in spite of rap bands and people that sing stupid crap like that. I know i sound like the moron that started this but i honestly do hate modern day rap. Back when it was MC Hammer and Cypress and the sort it was great, mainly because every other second someone wasn’t talking about having sex with some slutty broad who has three children and has no clue who the fathers are, or killing someone cause they scuffed their new jordans. So until i see some kind of explaination from you saying why this band is just so terrible, i will continue to believe you are retarded and shouldn’t be near any electric equipment in the first place. Here’s your helmet, go have fun. = ]

  22. MSI is a great band I can honestly say that when a song gets stuck in my head it’s never irritating. How can you say that just because they are the #1 unsigned band on Myspace doesn’t make them good when that in fact proves it. If a band is good and they haven’t made fans then they don’t know how to advertise. Now if they are advertising right then they just suck and have no business making music.(not that I don’t believe in making music for the sake of making music, it’s fun)
I like all different types of music, classic rock, punk, industrial, techno, rap, hardcore, metal, pop, and even country and I can tell when music is good and when it has artistic expression(two completely different things), I’ve been working with music since I was just a 6th grader and I’ve seen every aspect of the business I hang out with musicians of all kinds and happen to be one myself. I’ve watched bands become successful and the truth is that if you have a lot of fans then you must be good.
Mindless Self Indulgence makes good music, Jimmy Urine is a genius producer, and they know how to make fans.

  24. Yes, I tried listening to this band and couldn’t get through 30 seconds of a song. They are not my music style; that’s all there is to it.

And…according to your comments on this, you don’t like music at all, do you? There seems to be a problem here….

Oh yeah, there’s more music styles in this world now than there was in the 80′s, 90′s, and farther back. Start typing random words into YouTube and click the first band that pops up. There may be bands up there up like, but, as of this moment, you don’t have musical tastes. Just saying…
