MJ: 3 Weeks In A Row At #1 On The UK Album Charts
By Marvin Marks on Jul 12, 2009 in Music News
The new UK album charts are out and for the 3rd week in a row Michael Jackson is at #1. And this week he dominated even more than previous two: six of the top 10 chart positions are Jackson albums (either solo or with the Jackson 5.)
These are the six MJ albums in the top 10 (with ranking)
#1 The Essential Michael Jackson
#3 Off the Wall
#4 Thriller
#5 Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5 – The Motown Years
#7 Number Ones
#9 Thriller 25
The big sales numbers for the greatest hits (Essential & Number Ones) is one thing but when you have an album that’s 30 years old (Off the Wall) at #3 and one that’s 27 years old (Thriller) at #4, that’s really amazing. Especially when you consider that they are apparently counting Thriller 25 as a separate album (and as you can see it ranks at #9 itself.) In the US charts I believe Thriller 25 is just counted as a part of the Thriller sales (since it includes the original album, just with extra new tracks.)
And “Man in the Mirror” is on the UK singles charts again. It’s at #3 this week (it was #2 last week.) In all there are 11 Michael Jackson songs (including one Jackson 5 song, “Who’s Lovin’ You”) among the top 40 UK singles.

I won’t make another post for it – but yup. He did it again this week. #1 again in the UK… and this time “only” 5 of the top 10 albums (instead of 6.)
I’m not surprised that Jackson is selling a lot of albums after his death, but doing *this* well is surprising. I’m not sure anyone has ever dominated the album charts to this magnitude before. 5 and 6 albums in the top 10 simultaneously (and this is true in both the US* and UK) — has this ever happened before?
*To anyone confused by the US Billboard 200 album charts (where MJ is nowhere to be found) you need to know that list is only of *NEW* albums so none of MJ’s albums are eligible. When you look at the comprehensive album charts you’ll see the real sales numbers and MJ is outselling all of the new albums (he had 6 of the top 9 in the US last week.)

If any artist/band has ever had 6 albums in the top 10 selling albums in both the US and the UK before (like MJ did last week) let me know (with a link to the proof.)
