Screamadelica – Primal Scream
By Marvin Marks on Jun 27, 2008 in Retro Reviews
Primal Scream’s Screamadelica is one of my favorite albums of the 1990s. And along with 1997′s Vanishing Point and 2000′s Xtrmntr it is one of three Primal Scream albums that I most highly recommend.
Screamadelica could be called an indie rock album inspired by house music, dub music, & gospel music. But such with such wide ranging influences it’s hard to define exactly what kind of album it is, other than a psychedelic one.
It starts off with the Rolling Stones inspired “Movin’ on Up” which features big “gospel” backing vocals and some great “Keith Richardsy” guitar.
The second track is a cover of The 13th Floor Elevators’ “Slip Inside This House.” But although it is a cover, it sounds very little like the original. They change the lyric to “Trip Inside This House” and if you listen to the song you’ll see why, assuming of course you’re “experienced.”
The fourth track is another highlight “Higher Than The Sun.” I could go through the whole album picking out tracks to “highlight” but really, this is an album to be heard as a whole.
If you like tripped out music, I cannot recommend Screamadelica any higher. It’s one of the greatest psychedelic albums I’ve ever heard. I must also highly recommend Primal Scream’s 1997 album Vanishing Point and their 2000 album XTRMNTR. They are brilliant too, and in totally different ways from this album and from each other.
