She & Him On Conan O’Brien
By Marvin Marks on May 2, 2008 in Features
I was trying to find the appearance of She & Him I saw on Craig Fergusen last night but I couldn’t find it on YouTube. But I did find this appearance on Conan O’Brien from last week.
“Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”
The She & Him album (Volume One) has been one of my favorites of the year so far. I was already a big fan of M. Ward (who is the “Him” part of the group of course and playing lead guitar in the video above) and I think she has a great voice for this type of music. The “She” is the actress Zooey Deschanel. While I can understand discounting it right off because it sounds like a vanity project, it’s really quite good.
So what type of music is it? It has a pre-Beatles pop music (think early ’60s Phil Specter productions) feeling as far as the production and arrangements. But there’s something else there as well that I have a hard time describing so it’s not merely an attempt at capturing an earlier sound.
The songs are short and sweet and catchy as all hell. I do recommend it. Check it out.
