Soul On Fire - Spiritualized
By Marvin Marks on Apr 27, 2008 in Song Reviews
I’m not sure how much I like Spiritualized’s latest album Songs in A & E just yet except I’m pretty sure I like it more than their last one, Amazing Grace, and I know I don’t like it as much as their best one, 1997’s Ladies & Gentlemen.
But I have been listening to the lead single “Soul On Fire” on repeat today and I think it’s fantastic. It’s one of those anthems that’s all about the chorus. Of course a song like that only works if the chorus is killer and it definitely is. It’s like an infectious disease in that instantly takes up permanent residence in the mind after it’s heard. Except, unlike a disease, it feels good.
When I’m listening to the chorus of this song up loud on my headphones it feels like what I imagine being carried into the clouds wrapped in an incredibly soft & warm blanket is like.
The infectiousness of the chorus is why I’ve played this song 10 times today. It’s the first new song I’ve heard in awhile that makes me instantly want to hear it again, actually it’s nice to know I can still get this excited about music. Sometimes it can feel like I’ve heard everything before. Not that this is a particularly original song, actually it’s arrangement & style reminds me a lot of some of the tracks from their album before last Let It All Come Down. This song isn’t about originality, it’s about a feeling and it gets that feeling across very well.
