Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous) Committed Suicide Yesterday

As a fan of Sparklehorse (in particular the 1998 album Good Morning Spider) I’m sad to share the news that Mark Linkous (who was Sparklehorse) committed suicide on March 6, 2010. He was 47.

(I just found this post I made a couple of years ago on my three favorite albums of 1998 and I included Good Morning Spider among my top three.)

The timing seems especially strange (although, I’m not sure what makes the timing of a suicide not strange… maybe that’s not the best way to put it) because just recently, after a long legal battle, Sparklehorse’s collaboration with Danger Mouse (and many others) titled Dark Night of the Soul was set to be given an official release this summer.

It’s an interesting album (I listened to it quite a few times last year) which features songs written by Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse with a variety of different guest musicians/vocalists including The Flaming Lips, Julian Casablancas, Frank Black, Iggy Pop, and David Lynch (who also responsible for some cool visual artwork for the project.) Among the collaborators on the album was Vic Chesnutt who committed suicide on Christmas Day.
