Stereolab – “Three Women”
By Mozart Breath on Jun 8, 2008 in Song Reviews
I do not know if this Stereolab cut from the new album “Chemical Chords”, which is to be released in August, is in reference to the Robert Altman film “3 Women” or not. The lyrics, however, are sung entirely in French and not enough interviews have been conducted as of yet to get this question successfully answered. Quite recently, the tune could be sampled on www.myspace.com/stereolab…and I would assume that this is still the case.
As for the song itself, which is the first “single”, since Stereolab don’t technically have chart hits, which is strange since they actually do make Pop music more times than not, but it is simply one of those mysteries of life. Anyhow, the song itself is rather mellow with slight horn touches in places, and when the song builds in tempo a distorted guitar line is brought into the forefront and soon accompanied by vibes as well. This is your classic and catchy European Pop beat as well. The keyboard touches are not quite as prominent as in some Stereolab songs, but their presence is still not surprisingly felt.
In some respects, this reminds me of a continuation of their last proper album, 2004’s “Margerine Eclipse”…but it is more stripped down, groovy Sunshine Pop minus some of the slight Techno flourishes of the last album as well. Good driving music, which is what Stereolab are often best at…the sort of music that makes you want to put on sunglasses. As mentioned in an earlier blog entry, the US tour dates start during the end of September and last for about a month or so, and bandleader Tim Gane has mentioned in the Rock press that the shows will be rather stripped down compared to the last couple of Stereolab road shows during 2004 and 2006, which should make for an interesting contrast.
