Stereolab ~ “Chemical Chords”

Groop Foto

It is Christmas in the Land of Stereolab, you delicious little devil-dogs! The new gem has arrived and Marquis De Sade is finally on your side, filled to the brim with prescription-drug pride. “Chemical Chords” is like a healthy bundle of raspberries slammed against your bosom in a most powerful manner. The party starts with the amazing and wholly enticing “Neon Beanbag”. Such joy, such madness…the grooves are so tight (as are my Dockers!).

Everything just sort of jingles away like an electronic sleigh ride; truly beautiful. Nice little horn arrangements make my nipples get all pointy and butter up my buttocks and leave this young lass with a severe case of the tingles! In short; Mommy like very much! “Three Women” has been the cut widely available on something called the Internet for months now. One wonders if it has anything to do with the Robert Altman film of the same name.

Here we have a record that features tasty little harpsichord moments of rapture and thoroughly enthralling string arrangements. I am of the opinion that this is the most substantial Stereolab release since the epic “Sound-Dust” record of 2001. There are some new tricks to be discovered and yet, something joyfully familiar in places as well.

Basically, if you enjoy Stereolab’s latter outings; starting with the transition that took place on “Emperor Tomato Ketchup”, then I genuinely feel you will get a kick out of this bitching little record. But don’t get me wrong, this sucker is pretty thorough and deliciously dense in places. Rumor has it that some of the more so experimental cuts from the “Chemical Chords” sessions might be available for purchase later this year, which is fine, but here we have plenty of evocative and thoughtful Pop (which is what the Groop is best at, if you want to know my honest opinion).

Here we are confronted and have our ear canals thoroughly massaged by pleasant vibes and curious sounds that perchance belong in some sort of vague Psychedelic detective movie that alas, only exists within the bubblegum confines of my noggin. “Chemical Chords” the song has an intense high school prom feeling running throughout and perhaps one of Tim Gane’s most beautifully written gems yet? Damn, is this thing ever elegantly produced; man alive! Ms. Sadier is in fine voice as always (reliable as an anchor). I must admit that “Chemical Chords” also has a playful Charlie’s Angels mood running throughout the song, on this I am for certain. And so, for a thorough taste of danceable mellow; I would highly suggest this shiny new Stereolab LP.
