That first Moby Grape record with Skip Spence

The first Moby Grape record changed many lives and including that of my ex-wife, Elaine. What’s funny as I stand here in the rain is the idea that now I am an older man, I have forgotten about my ex-wife something fierce, but the music of Moby Grape like totally lingers or some junk. Why is this? I do not know who I am, and it has been decades since I have last seen my two sons Dwayne and Edmond.

Moby Grape in the beginning featured a gentleman by the name of Skip Spence (what more needs to be said?). If you do not know who or what a Moby Grape is or was, I suggest a trip to your local library, Jack. A standout cut on Moby Grape’s debut is the Skip Spence number “Omaha”. It is a really hard-hitting Psychedelic jam that just grooves like nobody’s business up in this motherfucker, bitch.

There’s some other interesting stuff on this 1967 debut, man. At least I believe the year was 1967, but the ‘60’s were such a fucking blur for me. Moving on; let’s discuss “Sitting by The Window”. This number features one of the other chaps in the band who is NOT Skip Spence and what he presents on this song is a bittersweet Psychedelic love-ballad from space. It is a tasty blend of guitars and deep penetrating percussion that always hits those hard-to-reach sweet spots. TEE-HEE!

Moby Grape; especially early on, created some profound Psychedelic bliss (far better than Grateful Dead or some junk). Another standout cut is “8:05”. It’s just a lovely Psychedelic-tinged Folk Rock ballad that will have you crying in the aisles. The keyword throughout this extended piece of poetry has been “Psychedelic”. Please listen to Moby Grape.

  1. I must admit - I’ve never got around to listening to Moby Grape, thanks for the reminder.
