The Beatles 15 Most Popular Songs On Last.FM
By Marvin Marks on Oct 20, 2009 in Features
I think I’ve done a post very similar to this in the past but what can I say? I’m addicted to The Beatles and to Last.FM and I find it very interesting to see which Beatles songs are played the most often.
I’m going to be using the chart from the last 6 months which ranks the songs in order of how many different people using the service have listened to the song at least once.
#01 – “Come Together” – Lennon – 118K
The first track on The Beatles biggest selling album (in the US, anyway.) I think this is one of the more “modern” sounding songs The Beatles did. Really the whole Abbey Road album has easily the “slickest” product of The Beatles career so it’s not too surprising that this John Lennon written song (although give Paul due credit for the great bass bits and keyboard licks) is currently the most listened to Beatles song.
Although when you consider that Abbey Road and Let It Be were not included in the Mono Box Set (because they were never mixed in mono) you would think that would hurt the numbers for the songs on those albums a bit.
#02 – “Let It Be” – McCartney – 115K
One of The Beatles most timeless songs. I’m not surprised it’s so high.
#03 – “Yesterday” – McCartney – 109K
Ditto. This is probably listened to by a lot of people who aren’t huge fans of the band, but they love this song.
#04 – “Eleanor Rigby” – McCartney – 105K
It’s amazing how screwed up the stereo mix of this song is really. I mean, the song is so brilliant that it overcomes the bad mix but I do recommend checking out the mono version of this in The Beatles Mono Box Set.
#05 – “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” – Lennon – 103K
Great song of course but personally I’ll take “Strawberry Fields Forever” & “I Am The Walrus” over this one as far as greatest psychedelic Beatles songs. I’m surprised to see neither of those in the top 15. Well at least surprised about “Strawberry Fields Forever.” It’s #18, by the way. “I Am The Walrus” is #23.
#06 – “Help!” – Lennon – 102K
I’m slightly surprised by this. I mean it’s definitely one of The Beatles catchiest songs and it has a lot more lyrical weight to it than do a lot of their other catchy early songs so I guess it makes sense. But I’m still a bit surprised by some of the songs it beat out for this position.
#07 – “All You Need Is Love” – Lennon – 102K
Barely beaten out by “Help!” I’d say this song is slightly overrated. I mean, I dig the song but there’s no way it’s the 7th greatest Beatles song ever.
#08 – “Hey Jude” – McCartney – 102K
I’m surprised by how low this is. Maybe it’s partly because it’s not on any of The Beatles proper studio albums? It’s the first song on the list that is not included on any studio album.
#09 – “Something” – Harrison – 102K
#10 – “Here Comes The Sun” – Harrison – 100K
George kicking it hardcore with his two lovely Abbey Road tunes.
#11 – “Yellow Submarine” – McCartney (Ringo) – 97K
OK, this is an amusing song to sing and all. I like it. I mean hell, I like almost everything The Beatles ever did. But #11? Clearly overrated as it’s ranked above about 100 Beatles songs that are better than it. I’m listing the songwriter for each song, this is the first case where the singer wasn’t also the songwriter (Paul wrote this song for Ringo to sing.)
#12 – “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” – Harrison – 88K
The first entry on my favorite album of all time, The White Album. Pretty big drop from 97K to 88K. Interesting.
#13 – “Get Back” – McCartney – 85K
Good time rock n roll magic.
#14 – “A Day In The Life” – Lennon/McCartney – 83K
The greatest song of all time.
#15 – “I Want To Hold Your Hand” – Lennon/McCartney – 82K
This first entry of the 62-64 era Beatles. Beatlemania indeed. This song remains catchy as hell all of these years later. And it still retains it’s energy. I bet not too many people would have believed at the time this song came out that 45+ years later there’d still be people listening to it and that there’d actually be 14 songs released by the band later that would have even more listeners.
