How about the individual song charts? They aren’t doing as well there (probably because so many people are buying the entire albums, as they should be.)

Still it’s interesting to see which Beatles songs are getting the most individual downloads. Here are they are:

#27 “Here Comes the Sun”
#31 “Let It Be”
#33 “In My Life”
#38 “Blackbird”
#48 “Come Together”
#67 “With a Little Help From My Friends”
#69 “Hey Jude”
#75 “Let It Be”
#77 “Twist & Shout”
#84 “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”
#86 “Eleanor Rigby”
#88 “I Saw Her Standing There”
#91 “Twist & Shout”
#93 “A Day in the Life”
#97 “Yesterday”
#101 “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
#102 “Help!”
#103 “Yesterday”
#105 “Something”
#108 “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da”
#113 “A Hard Day’s Night”
#118 “Can’t Buy Me Love”
#121 “Hey Jude”
#125 “Dear Prudence”
#127 “Here Comes the Sun”
#128 “I Am The Walrus”
#129 “Strawberry Fields Forever”
#130 “I Saw Her Standing There”
#136 “When I’m Sixty-Four”
#137 “All My Loving”
#141 “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”
#142 “Revolution”
#148 “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
#157 “Penny Lane”
#160 “Norwegian Wood”
#163 “I’ll Follow the Sun”
#165 “Hello, Goodbye”
#166 “I Should Have Known Better”
#170 “The Long and Winding Road”
#171 “Across the Universe”
#172 “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”
#173 “Back in the USSR”
#179 “Come Together”
#182 “Do You Want to Know a Secret?”
#184 “All You Need Is Love”
#186 “If I Fell”
#188 “Yellow Submarine”
#192 “I Want to Hold Your Hand”
#199 “Rocky Raccoon”
#200 “Hey Jude”

Some songs (like “Let It Be,” “Yesterday,” and “Hey Jude”) are on the list multiple times. I don’t know what the deal is with that.

In all there are 50 Beatles songs among the top 200. Which is actually pretty damn amazing, especially considering how well the albums (and the box set) are selling too. People who buy the box set are really buying all of the albums (and songs) yet it only counts as one purchase.

  1. Most surprisingly high? I think I’m going to go with “Blackbird” as the 4th highest Beatles song… I absolutely love “Blackbird” myself – but I’m just surprised to see it so popular.

I’m also surprised that “I Should Have Known Better” made the top 200 when so many far better Beatles songs did not.

  2. As of the next day (11:29 AM) they are doing even better on the album charts:

    The Beatles Have:

    3 of the top 10
    6 of the top 14
    10 of the top 22
    16 of the top 35

and Yellow Submarine is still the lowest ranked Beatles album but it’s moved up from #53 to #47.

  3. And you really have to consider how many album sales The Beatles in Stereo Box Set (#11) is robbing from the individual albums…

Most likely everyone buying that box set would have been buying most (if not all) of the albums separately if it were not available which would have boosted the individual album sales significantly.

  4. The Beatles are also moving up the singles charts, “Here Comes The Sun” is now at #17 (up from #27.)

I won’t do a full run down, but it looks like most of the songs on the list from last night have moved up (for example “Let It Be” is up to #23 from #31 and “In My Life” is up to #25 from #33)

  5. The reason why some songs (like “Let It Be”, “Yesterday”, and “Hey Jude”) are on the list multiple times is because if they are bought/downloaded from their original album, or from the red/blue albums or from the box-set, in the end they appear as different entries in the charts. That means that songs that appear mutiple times “should” be much higher in the list… And songs (Beatles or not) that are “behind” these songs should be charted higher too.
