The Beatles “Top Tracks” At Last.FM

The “top track” (played by the most people) at Last.FM for each of The Beatles albums along with some commentary on the song and in some cases a lovely YouTube video for you to peruse.

Please Please Me (1963) – “Love Me Do” – #19

I think the only logical explanation is that “Love Me Do” opens some of their greatest hits compilations that are arranged by release date. “Love Me Do” was their very first single. It’s also easily their very worst single and not even close to being the best song on Please Please Me. I’ll definitely take the title track, “Twist & Shout,” and “I Saw Her Standing There” instead.

With The Beatles (1963) – “All My Loving” – #68

Easily the biggest hit on their second album, I’m not surprised it’s the top track from this album as I think it’s the only one that’s included on any “greatest hits” type collections.

A Hard Day’s Night (1964) – “Can’t Buy Me Love” – #18

Barely beating out the title track which comes in at #20.

Beatles For Sale (1964) – “Eights Days a Week” – #31

Definitely the biggest hit on the album although there are a lot of songs on Beatles For Sale I prefer such as “No Reply,” “Loser,” and “I’ll Follow The Sun.”

Help! (1965) – “Yesterday” – #3

Beats out the title track which comes in at #8.

Rubber Soul (1965) – “In My Life” – #32

How ridiculous are The Beatles that a song as perfect as “In My Life” is only their 32nd most played song on Last.FM?

Revolver (1966) – “Eleanor Rigby” – #6

Definitely a classic. Surprisingly the next highest song from the album is only #50 (“Taxman.”)

Sgt. Pepper’s (1967) – “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” – #5

“A Day in the Life” is only #15? A bit of a crime, really.

Magical Mystery Tour (1967) – “All You Need Is Love” – #7

I’m more of an “I Am the Walrus” (#21) & “Strawberry Fields Forever” (#17) type of guy.

The White Album (1968) – “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” - #12

My favorite Beatles album, ah yes.

Yellow Submarine (1969) – “Hey Bulldog” – #170

I skipped “Yellow Submarine” and “All You Need Is Love” as they had already been released on previous albums. There were only 4 new songs on Yellow Submarine and “Hey Bulldog” is the highest ranked of those. It’s a great song, although I actually prefer “It’s All Too Much” which is #204 by the way and has to be the most underrated Beatles song in history.

The “Hey Bulldog” clip from the movie, check it out:

Abbey Road (1969) – “Come Together” – #2

I’m a bit surprised that “Come Together” is this high, although it is a pretty wicked sounding song – isn’t it? The bass groovy is definitely the sauce.

Let It Be (1970) – “Let It Be” – #1

There will be an answer, eh? Not too surprising this is #1. “Hey Jude” would have been my other guess, it’s #4. I think maybe if “Hey Jude” wasn’t 7 minutes long it’d have a better shot at the top spot.
