The Beatles US Album Sales Records
By Marvin Marks on Jul 1, 2009 in Music Trivia
The Beatles hold quite a couple pretty impressive US album sales records:
Most #1 Albums: 19.
Second place is Elvis Presley & Jay Z tied at 10.
Most Total Weeks At #1: 132.
Second place is Elvis Presley at 67.

I also think they are the all time leader in total albums sold in the US and I think they also hold the record for most “diamond” albums (that’s 10 million units shipped in the US) but I can’t seem to find confirmation of either these factoids. It’s surprising how hard it is to find this kind of information.

What I think is amazing about these two records is how far ahead of 2nd place they are. It’s a real annihilation, particularly when you consider how short their career really was.

According to the RIAA The Beatles have sold 170 million albums in the US. Next is Garth Brooks with 128 million then Elvis Presley with 119 million.
According to Soundscan during the period 1991-2008 The Beatles sold 57 million albums (the second most). Garth Brooks sold 68 million during this period and Elvis Presley 30 million.
The Beatles are the biggest selling artists of all time in the US and also world wide.

Thanks Bob. I find it rather shocking the amount of albums Garth Brooks has sold. It’s at least somewhat comforting to know that he’s sold almost no albums outside of the US.
BTW, The Beatles remastered Box Sets are now available for pre-order: http://www.musicbyday.com/the-beatles-remastered-cd-box-sets-now-available-for-pre-order/483/
