The Notorious Byrd Brothers by The Byrds

This is an awesome album by The Byrds and you’re just jealous. If you truly love real Psychedelic music with every fiber in your being, then you know good and well that this is the record for you. People may sometimes forget that The Byrds were awesome. The fact is that “The Notorious Byrd Brothers” was their very best record second only to its follow-up (the Gram Parsons-influenced “Sweetheart of the Rodeo”).

My favorite cuts include “Change is now”, “Dolphin’s Smile” and “Wasn’t Born to follow”. I should clarify that “Wasn’t born to follow” is one of the greatest Country-tinged Psychedelic tunes of all-time. It was featured in the film “Easy Rider”. “Wasn’t born to follow” is such an awesome song, damn you! This record has a lot of cool phasing and neat production stuff for the time period that makes me so very moist DOWN THERE. There’s a weird MOOG jam “Space Odyssey” that is sincerely eerie as hell.

All was not well in Byrd land on this record, that douche David Crosby got the boot and the drummer apparently quit after his feelings got hurt. An album born out of intense Hippie drama truly yielded a soft Psychedelic gem with those tasty Byrds harmonies that go down so very good. Do let it be known that a deluxe version in recent years was probably released on that far out SUNDAZED label. An inexplicable bonus cut entitled “Universal Mind Detector” captures a rather intense verbal spat amongst the band members. Not to be missed!
