The Vatican’s Top 10 Albums

The Vatican came out with a list of 10 recommended albums that is not altogether terrible (although there are some unusual choices.) Here it is:

#1 The Beatles - Revolver

The “hip” selection for #1 Beatles album. It’s not my #1, but most hipsters seem to think it’s the pinnacle of The Beatles output. I suppose the Pope will be wearing skinny jeans soon.

#2 David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name

I had never even heard of this album before. It was Crosby’s first solo album, released in 1971.

#3 Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

I wonder if there’s a lot of pot smokers in the Vatican?

#4 Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

I bet the Pope thought Stevie Nicks was a real fox around 1977. He was not alone in having the opinion of course.

#5 Donald Fagen - The Nightfly

Fagen is mostly known for his work with Steely Dan. This 1982 album was Fagen’s solo debut. I’ve never heard it but I suppose I’ll have to check it out now.

#6 Michael Jackson - Thriller

I wonder if the Pope likes to moonwalk?

#7 Paul Simon - Graceland

The Vatican seems to really enjoy solo albums by folks who used to be members of very successful groups. Although, unlike the albums by Crosby & Fagen I was already well aware of this one and have listened to it quite a few times. It’s a good album.

#8 U2 - Achtung Baby

Joshua Tree seems like a much more natural choice as a classic album. Achtung Baby is much more futuristic sounding. Although “Mysterious Ways” is about God, right?

#9 Oasis - (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?

The second newest album on the list (1995.)

This selection shows that the list is definitely made based on just the music itself and not the behavior of the people who make the music. Noel Gallagher has said many negative things about religion in interviews.

#10 Carlos Santana - Supernatural

I really hate this album. It’s the one where he collaborated with people like Rob Thomas (that awful “Smooth” song.) Even thinking about it actually makes me feel a little nauseous.

This is the newest album on the list, so I suppose they were not considering anything from the new millennium. Or they just haven’t really liked any new album released over the last 10 years.
