Top 10 60s/70s Artists On Last.FM

As a follow-up to my last post on the top 10 artists on Last.FM, I thought it’d be interesting to look at the top 10 artists who released most of their music in the 60s and 70s are. I think this gives a good idea of which “classic” artists have continued to stay relevant not only to the people who originally loved their music (most of whom probably don’t have Last.FM accounts) but also to music lovers of later generations (who often do.)

#1 The Beatles
#2 Pink Floyd
#3 Queen
#4 Bob Dylan
#5 Led Zeppelin
#6 David Bowie
#7 The Rolling Stones
#8 The Doors
#9 Johnny Cash
#10 The Who

There were a few artists that were right on the edge as far as 70s vs. 80s that I cut, I set a rule that the artist’s debut album had to be out by 1975.

Overall this list is pretty close to what I would think it would be. Maybe Queen is a bit higher than I would have expected. Johnny Cash is a bit higher too but I think that’s explained by the movie and the popularity of his covers of songs by Nine Inch Nails and the like.

Actually I find this list so interesting I’m going to keep it up, I’m sort of curious about who’d be in the next 10…

#11 Bob Marley
#12 Black Sabbath
#13 Bruce Springsteen
#14 Elvis Presley
#15 Deep Purple
#16 Simon & Garfunkel
#17 Neil Young
#18 The Kinks
#19 The Beach Boys
#20 CCR

Elvis is better classified as 50s and he’s #1 as far as that goes, but I figured I should include him. Bruce Springsteen probably sold more records in the ’80s than the ’70s but his debut album was from 1973 so I figured I had to include him too.

  1. Somehow I missed Jimi Hendrix, he should actually be #11 above Bob Marley.

  2. I also missed AC/DC who should have been in at #10 after Johnny Cash.
