Top Ten Albums Of 2009 (So Far)

Continuing on with my RateYourMusic.com theme (I do love that website) I’m going to use their rankings as the basis for this ranking of the top 10 albums of ’09 thus far.

I am going to add in some filters to get rid of some of the junk that tends gets in the way on RYM. I’m including a a rule of a min. of 500 ratings and anything with the word “metal” anywhere in the genre description is skipped. Sorry Mastodon, but I just don’t give a shit about whatever you’re doing.

Metal albums always fill the top rankings on RYM, probably because only people that like metal bother rating them. I can’t stand metal and I’m betting most of the people reading this blog can’t either, so I think it makes sense to just remove all of those from the list to get something we can work with.

So what’s the point of this list? Really it’s just to give people an idea of some new albums they may want to check out. In fact, I haven’t heard all of the albums on this list myself, so I’ll be getting to that. I do recommend listening to Dark Was the Night as I’m enjoying that album quite a bit.

01. Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavilion
02. Grizzly Bear – Veckatimist
03. maudlin of the Well – Part the Second
04. Bill Callahan – Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle
05. Dinosaur Jr. – Farm
06. Various Artists – Dark Was the Night
07. Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
08. The Decemberists – Hazards of Love
09. Mono – Hymn to the Immortal World
10. Sonic Youth – The Eternal

  1. I dig Dark Was the Night too. It’s a Sparkehorse deal but with lots of other people contributing … different people/bands on each track. David Lynch. The Flaming Lips… the dude from .. ah hell. I can’t remember. Just check it out.

  2. Marvin, actually you’re thinking of “Dark Night of the Soul”. The album listed above, “Dark Was the Night” came out a few weeks into 2009, and is a compilation benefitting the Red Hot organization. Both albums are really good, but the Sparklehorse project you’re referring to was never given an official release.

  3. You’re right… Dark Night of the Soul, that is what I meant. I’m not sure what’s going on here!

  4. I’m not sure what my albums of the year are… I guess I’ll wait until a bit and let things seep in more. Although there doesn’t appear to be too many more releases this year I’m too excited about.

I think The Flaming Lips Embryonic is probably my top pick.
