Yellow Submarine Premiered On June 17, 1968
By Marvin Marks on Jul 17, 2008 in Music Trivia
It was 40 years ago today that The Beatles animated feature film Yellow Submarine premiered at The London Pavilion. The Beatles themselves had very little to do with the film (other than the music of course.) They made a cameo appearance at the very end of the movie but they did not voice their characters.
Someone has been lovely enough to upload the entire movie to Google Video. I don’t know if anyone will scream bloody copyright infringement and have it taken down. But for now here it is:
Originally the film was accompanied by a rather slight soundtrack which included only six Beatles songs, two of them having been previously released (”Yellow Submarine” & “All You Need Is Love.”)
The four originals were “Only a Northern Song,” “All Together Now,” “Hey Bulldog,” & “It’s All Too Much.”
“Hey Bulldog” & “It’s All Too Much” are two of my favorite lesser known Beatles tracks actually, but they are not enough to make up for the fact that 7 of the 13 songs on the album are very forgettable George Martin instrumentals.
In 1999 a Yellow Submarine Songtrack was released which is actually far more representative of the film. It contains the songs that were in the film. The songs were also remixed from the original tracks and sound quite different from the versions on the albums. I will not say better, but definitely different. If you’re a Beatles fan and you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend checking it out.
The tracklisting:
1. “Yellow Submarine”
2. “Hey Bulldog”
3. “Eleanor Rigby”
4. “Love You To”
5. “All Together Now”
6. “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
7. “Think for Yourself”
8. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
9. “With a Little Help from My Friends”
10. “Baby You’re a Rich Man”
11. “Only a Northern Song”
12. “All You Need Is Love”
13. “When I’m Sixty Four”
14. “Nowhere Man”
15. “It’s All Too Much.”
A longer 8 minute+ version of “It’s All Too Much”
This is the complete version as heard in the film with the extra verses. Unfortunately this version isn’t included on the Yellow Submarine Songtrack.
