Yer Best Bet with Beck (’94 edition)
By Mozart Breath on Sep 23, 2009 in Features
I go on an album-by-album basis, analyzing individual tracks of note. Some Beck albums will be worth your while. You decide based upon my song selections (just rethink your whole life, that’s all I ask).
Beck ~ “Mellow Gold”
A record with many highlights! LOSER, PAY NO MIND (SNOOZER), WHISKEY-CLONE: HOTEL CITY 1997 and NITEMARE HIPPY GIRL are among the best. There is also the obscure “Golden Feelings” leftover cut TRUCKDRIVIN’ NEIGHBORS DOWNSTAIRS (YELLOW SWEAT) which cannot be overlooked either. You should purchase this record, or listen to it again if you already have it.
Beck ~ “Stereopathetic Soul Manure”
A rarities collection slush disguised as a legit record, one of three released in 1994. Highlights include THE SPIRIT MOVES ME and MODESTO; these two tracks are some of the more melodic in the bunch and have a vague Country yearning about them. Most of the record however, consists of wacky Noise Rock jams such as PINK NOISE (ROCK ME AMADEUS) and ROLLINS POWER SAUCE. This record is enjoyable to a degree if you happen to like schoolgirl era Beck, long before he arrived at the plateau of becoming a serious near-forty-something daddy.
Beck ~ “One Foot in the Grave”
The final of the trilogy of records released in 1994, and be prepared for a nice LO-FI Stephen Malkmus t-shirt vibe. Incredible tracks include I GET LONESOME and TEENAGE WASTEBASKET (which can be found on the recent 15th anniversary edition as a bonus cut in two forms…acoustic and the superior electric version). You will want this lovely record, as it has a strong Christian Rock vibe that might be a little surprising coming from Beck. Swell lyrics will only further enhance your already greatly enriched listening experience!
Up next, I will cover “ODELAY” through “Midnight Vultures” and then…”Sea Change” through “Modern Guilt”. Stay tuned, as my viewpoints are important and hold a rather substantial religious significance!

I used to get a real kick out of Stereopathetic Soul Manure but I haven’t listened to it in a long time. Plenty of really crazy songs on that one.
