Your Sister’s Canary

Your Sister’s Canary is a band from Bergen, New Jersey and they play Blues/Pop/Jazz music, at least that’s what it says on their MySpace page.

So how come I’m reviewing this band? Unlike some of the really horrid MySpace bands we’ve reviewed on this site before (Hollywood Undead) this one wasn’t found at the top of the most played artists charts, instead there was an EMail tip sent in to check out Your Sister’s Canary. And occasionally these EMails are actually read and acted upon, this is one of those occasions! (Send your Email to MusicByDayAdmin@GMail.com)

They’ve currently got four songs available for streaming play: “Bread,” “Miss Bona Fide,” “Lydia Albright,” and “(Fish and) Ships.”

“Bread” – The voices at the beginning are pretty tripped out. I like how it kicks into gear with “wife & children.” It has a sort of harder edged version of Crosby, Stills, & Nash sound to it. There are a lot of little surprising changes in the arrangement which I can appreciate, but it also makes it a bit harder to really get into the song at first. I’m also not sure if the vocals are mixed loud enough during the heavy guitar bits. It also feels a bit too disjointed to me. But, I’ve only listened to it a couple of times. These are just first impressions.

“Miss Bona Fide” – This one has a bit of a Jack White sound on the vocals. I find the whole thing a bit too “wet.” Too much reverb. It’s good, “Bread” was good too but I’m not sure if it’s something I would want to listen to really. At about 1:40 there’s a real surprising change. I appreciate the left turn, but I find myself losing interest again pretty quickly.

This seems like a band with talent and a band with a lot of ideas (which is good.) But they may be throwing a little bit too much at the wall. Or maybe it’s just not really my style of music. I’m not sure what it is, I like it well enough but I doubt I’ll seek it out again.

  3. Long Bong? Who are you? How old are you? What sort of experience do you have reviewing bands? What sort of credibility do you hold?

Your Sister’s Canary has nothing to worry about, for this is an incredibly amateur review and they are far from an amateur band.

This band deserves a listen by all…

  4. Hey Ursula – I’m the admin here and I agree this isn’t a great review (Long Bong) but you know – no one is ever going to agree on all music. He says it’s good but it’s not for him, that’s just the way it is sometimes.
